Keep Watch

oil lamp“Nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near . . . Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap . . . Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. ~ Luke 21:25-28, 34, 36

Our response

These are sobering verses because it seems entirely plausible that these things could happen in our lifetime. Our times certainly do make us apprehensive. God desires for us to keep an eternal perspective, however, so it is good every now and then to take spiritual inventory.

Be careful
. . . or your hearts will be weighed down with the anxieties of life.

What do you worry about most? Hebrews 12:1 says to throw of everything that hinders. How might you throw off everyday anxieties?

Be prepared
. . . or that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap.

The parable of the ten virgins with their lamps waiting for the bridegroom underscores the need for preparation. Do you have the oil of the Holy Spirit so that you can persevere regardless of how long the wait? The flame of love burning for Jesus must be lit so that He will know us when He returns. What needs trimming from your life so that the flame can burn more brightly?

Pray
. . . so that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.

Luke 20:19 says that by standing firm we gain life. Where are you weak spiritually? What areas of your life need prayer? Matthew 18:20 says that where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Who might stand with you in your spiritual battles?

Prayer

Lord, you see what weighs me down; you see where I am weak. Where I am blind, please open my eyes. Be my strength; make me unshakable. In Jesus name. Amen.
